This was one of my first images, as soon as I purchased my first semi-professional digital Camera i decided I wanted to play with lights. About a week before this session, leaving from a job we went to a bar close to a friend´s house. There, as soon as we walked in we saw Kirstyn waiting on tables, she was just the style of girls I liked to photograph, but back then I didn´t have much work to show and to convince a model to work without having a portfolio to show is not easy. But we called for her and after a few drinks and some conversation we had a date set. She was the sweetest girl and proved to be a great person to work with. At that time she had never worked with a photographer, amateur or professional, today you can see her portfolio here:   Kirstyn I Including some pics we did in other sessions after this one. The image below was taken the second time we worked together:

The day we met to shoot I was carrying two strobes and a video light, aside from a few lenses and a camera a bit better than mine that I had loaned from my former boss. We looked around for a good place to shoot (something I have learned to not lave till the last minute)> But we were in luck and found an awesome barn close to my friend´s house, so we drove back, grabbed the base, the TV and headed back to the barn. I had an image in mind but wanted to see what everything would look like in the spot.

By the time we got there it was pretty dark, the barn was part of an abandoned house so there was neither electricity nor anyone around. I decided to leave the flashes aside and use only the video light, in my mind creating alook of some strange light inside the barn, something that would look less like studio lights and more realistic.

From this shoot I got one of the first images I later edited and posted in my site which wasback then far from what you see today (the website  www.jcmartins.com ). After that, several people asked me how I lit the shot, how I edited it and Etc. So I decided to start my weekly tutorials with this one even though, today, I would do several things different, both in lighting and post production, but since this is how I started learning, this is how I’ll start here.

The image below is the same style of video light I used, I couldn´t find the exact same one to post here, but this should give you an idea.

Before I start with this and the next tutorials I wanted totalk about what  most helped me to learn in Photoshop up to this day. Not many people know that Adobe has inside the software and their website, a world of information about their software. Every week I will be using terms that comes naturally to me, healing tool, brushes, layers, adjustment layers, lasso tool etc. So if you are not familiar with these terms please visit Adobe first, or click in help inside photoshop, familiarize yourself with Photoshop´s layout and it´s tools , what they are used for and the rest you will learn as I have, playing around.

Another thing I would like to reiterate with absolute certainty is that there are no absolutes in Photoshop. For each effect there are thousands of ways of getting there so because of that nothing I show here has the smallest aspiration of being correct for one of the first things I learned about this software is that being correct is extremely relative. Every day I learn a new way of doing things, everyday I find new things that save me time, so here what I am offering is my way of doing things, and as I mentioned in my first post of this category the space is open to hear yours as well, please feel free to help me make this section a great source of information.

Ninety percent of my work is made with layers and layer masks. To me the great strength in Photoshop exists because of its viability in using layers, to control separate pieces of an image without affecting the original file, and this is the greatest secret in the explosion that rocketed Photoshop in front of all their competitors a few years back. To be able to use layers gives us the power of control in an image absolutely fantastic. It is arduous and takes time to achieve the desired results but when you do they are amazing. So the reason I mention it is if you are not familiar with this please refer back to Adobe, learn it well, play around with layers and layer masks first then come back here and you will understand easier everything I am trying to say.

In the image below I am showing where the group of tools (pallets) are of the everything I will be using the most in my posts. The tools, the layers, and the adjustment layers, please look in the Adobe site where each tool is inside these pallets.

Here I wanted to start by altering the color and contrast of the floor and a few other elements of the photo.

So I went to adjustment layers (right below the layers pallet) and chose color balance, inside I tweaked everything to my taste.

At this moment the entire image has changed, and what you see below is the result of an extra step I will explain now. Once you´ve created the adjustment layer you will notice it comes with a white square right beside it, in the layers palette ( Example )

Before painting on the mask I also created an adjustment layer for brightness and contrast, raising the contrast to the entire photo. Now, making sure you have the mask selected we go to the tools pallet and choose the brush.

It is very important that you have chosen the black color for the brush, for what it does is eliminate the white once you paint on the layer mask. Remember one thing, white reveals, black conceals.

Once the brush, the black color and the mask is selected we paint with black over the places on the picture where we don’t want the color to show (in this case, orange) doing that you will notice how the orange starts to disappear and the underlying image start to appear only where you are painting.

Doing that on the model’s body, on the TV, and on the chair, and again the same thing in the brightness and contrast layer this is the result:

Here I decided to lift the model´s jeans, to make it pop.

So I did the same as in the last step, however this time I chose a blue color.

I created a new color balance adjustment layer that appears in the layer palett in the same way as in the last step. This time however since what I want to show is a much smaller part in the picture it will be easier for me to reveal my change instead of concealing it. So what I did here was go to the tool pallet, choose the paint bucket, select the black color and click it over the picture (making sure the mask of the new layer is selected) what happens is the adjustment you just made disappears. So now, instead of painting with black we will select the tool brush, select white and paint only in the areas where we want the blue to show, in this case the jeans, doing that we will be revealing the adjustment we just made.

Here, however the blue wasn´t looking too real, so what I did was set the layer to overlay (please refer again to adobe´s info page or help and look up blending modes). That blended the blue better and added contrast, so I dialed the opacity down to my liking and this is the result:

Again here I created an adjustment layer,  this time a black and white layer, excluded the model´s body and dialed down the opacity making the entire scene less colorful.

I then repeated the step, this time not excluding the model, dialed down the opacity to my liking and set the layer to overlay, increasing the contrast of the entire image.

Here I used another image I took that day and added it to the TV. It is hard to see in such a small size but it is quite clear with a bigger version of the image. I first pasted it into the image I was working on, then I transformed it, first with free transform and then with the distort tool to fit it well into the TV screen. These tools are in EDIT – TRANSFORM. Once I had it at the right size and position I overlapped it with the screen and set the layer to overlay. At first it didn’t look too god so I dialed down the opacity a lot, added new layers by duplicating that one and changed the opacities until it looked as I wanted it to..

Now I wanted to add something extra to the picture, something I hadn´t thought about beforehand. Blood. This is a complicated subject and it is up to anyone who attempts it to find what best works for them. There are in the internet a thousand tutorials to do this; here I was quite conservative and not very perfectionist.

First I created a new empty layer (layer – new layer) or if you go to the pallet below the layers, right before the trashcan there is a new layer icon that will create a layer upon clicking it.

Then I chose a brush that looked like some kind of liquid, chose the red color I thought worked best and painted where I wanted the blood, it doesn’t look very realistic by itself, so again several layers were created and set to different blending modes until I reached a result I liked.

Here I added a bit more blood to places that were bothering me such as her chest and arm, as they looked a bit blown out, I could either go back and fix it or add blood, chose the latter.

I then found something else that bothered me, marks in her stomach formed by the way she was sitting and the harsh light.

So I created another empty layer went to the tools pallet and chose the healing brush.

Here being thorough and careful is very important to achieving a realistic look.  I zoomed in very close, made the brush tip very small and used several layers at different opacities to achieve a realistic look, to understand you will have to try it yourself and play around a bit until you find what you are looking for.

The additions of layers at various opacities makes the cloned parts blend better, the best way of doing this is cloning a bit in one layer dialing down the opacity, then cloning a bit more in the next and again and again…

Esta foi uma de minhas primeiras Imagens, logo que peguei minha primeira câmera digital semi-profissional decidi que ia brincar com luzes. Mais ou menos uma semana antes desta sessão ao sair do trabalho com um amigo fuimos a um Happy Hour em um barzinho perto de sua casa. Assim que entramos eu vi a Kirstyn servindo uma das mesas. Naquela época não tinha muito trabalho para mostrar e conseguir modelo para experimentar luzes e treinar fotografia sem ter um portfolio era difícil. Assim que pedi para sentar na área do restaurante que ela estava atendendo e depois de algumas horas e várias cervejas havíamos marcado uma sessão de fotos para a semana seguinte.  Ela nunca havia modelado ou tirado fots com um fotógrafo, amador ou profissional, hoje podem ver o portfolio dela aqui:  ModelMayhem – kirstyn I incluindo fotos que fizemos em outras sessões. (uma delas, a imagem abaixo que foi tirada na nossa segunda sessão juntos)

No dia que nos encontramos, eu carregava duas luzes de flash e uma luz de vídeo, além de algumas lentes e uma câmera mais profissional que a minha ( emprestada ). Procuramos por uma meia hora um local interessante (coisa que aprendi depois a não deixar para última hora) por sorte encontramos, ao chegar lá decidimos que precisaríamos de mais algumas coisas, assim que voltamos até a minha casa e pegamos um baixo, um machado e uma televisão velha. Tinha umas idéias na cabeça mas queria ir e brincar para ver se conseguia alguma foto que gostasse.

Assim que ao chegar, o lugar já estava escuro e em vez de usar os meus flashes optei por uma única luz, a de vídeo. Tentava criar uma sensação de realidade, um lugar com uma luz de teto, escuro e sombrio.

Enfim daí saiu uma das primeiras imagens que depois vim a trabalhar e usar no meu site. Muita gente me perguntou como fiz para que as cores ficassem como ficaram, que iluminação usei etc, então resolvi começar por essa ainda que hoje, depois de alguns anos teria feito algumas coisas diferentes, na hora de fotografar e na hora de editar, mas como assim comecei meu aprendizado assim começo por aqui.

A imagem abaixo retrata o mesmo estilo de luz que usei para esta foto.  No entanto não é a mesma luz exata, não consegui encontrar uma imagem da luz na internet, nem no Brasil, estou procurando uma luz de vídeo de boa potência, com intensidade controlável cujo poder vem de uma bateria grande – ou pequena-  se alguém sabe como conseguir uma do estilo por aqui fico agradecido pela informação)

Antes de começar os meu textos semanais queria passar a quem interesse o link que mais me ajudou a aprender no photoshop até hoje.  Não muitos sabem que Adobe têm em seu site uma quantidade enorme de informação, e como acabo de descobrir, as têm também em português.  Todas as semanas vou estar usando termos que para mim vêm natural como ajustes de camadas, camadas, ferramentas de retoque, pincel de recuperação, carimbo, laço, conta gotas, etc.  Eu mesmo, estou aprendendo todos este termos em português, assim que para mim o site do Adobe têm sido muito valioso.

Então para vocês que não têm familiaridade como essa terminologia por favor tentem dar uma olhada no site do Adobe primeiro e se familiarizem com o layout do photoshop, onde estão as ferramentas, para que servem etc; e o resto você vai aprendendo aos poucos como eu venho aprendendo ha anos, brincando.

Outra coisa que queria reiterar com absoluta firmeza é que nada em photoshop é absoluto. Para cada efeito há dez maneiras diferentes de alcançá-lo e por isso nada do que mostro aqui tem a pretensão de ser a maneira correta, porque uma das primeiras coisas que aprendi é que correto em photoshop é extremamente relativo. Todos os dias aprendo novas maneiras de fazer algo, muitas vezes vou descobrindo coisas novas que me salvam tempo e conseqüentemente, dinheiro, assim que aqui vou mostrando o meu processo de aprendizado e o que hoje uso.

Noventa por cento do meu trabalho é feito com camadas e máscaras.  Para mim a grande potência do photoshop existe pela sua viabilidade em usar camadas, de controlar pedaços de foto separadamente, e é esse o  maior segredo da explosão do photoshop no mercado quando bateu a léguas de distância os seus concorrentes de antigamente.  Poder usar camadas e máscaras nos dá um poder de controle sobre uma imagem absolutamente fantástico, é trabalhoso, leva tempo, mas os resultados são incríveis. Assim que se alguém que estiver lendo aqui ainda não entende bem o que são as camadas e como usar-las por favor dêem uma passada outra vez lá no site do Adobe:

Nesta imagem abaixo, mostro onde estão os grupos de ferramentas que mais vou mencionar nos meus textos:  as ferramentas, as camadas e os ajustes de camadas, por favor vejam no site do adobe onde está cada uma dentro desses grupos.

Aqui queria começar alterando a cor e o contraste do chão e alguns elementos da foto.

Então fui até a barra de ajuste e cliquei no botão Nova Camada de Ajuste  na parte inferior da paleta Camadas, e escolhi color balance, lá dentro brinquei um pouco até que o chão chegasse a cor que eu queria.

Só que nesse momento toda a imagem está sendo transformada, e o que você vê abaixo é o resultado depois do próximo passo.  Uma ves que criar a nova camada, você vai reparar que ela vem com uma máscara branca, um quadradinho todo branco ao lado da camada que acabamos de criar ( Exemplo ).

Antes de pintar, nesse caso eu também criei uma camada de ajuste para contraste e brilho, aumentando o contraste e brilho da foto.   Agora, tendo certeza que a máscara da camada de cor está selecionada vamos ir até a paleta de ferramentas e escolher o pincel.

É muito importante que o pincel esteja escolhido na cor negra.

Uma vez com pincel selecionado, a máscara selecionada vamos pintar de negro, tudo o que não queremos que fique da cor que criamos (nesse caso laranja) fazendo isso você vai reparando como o laranja vai desaparecendo e a imagem de baixo vai surgindo somente onde voce está pintando de negro.

Ao fazer isso no corpo da modelo, na televisâo e na cadeira, e logo também na camada de contraste, eliminando algum defeito que me incomode causado por excesso de contraste esse é o resultado que cheguei:

Aqui decidi aumentar a cor do jeans da modelo, para que realmente se diferenciasse do demais na foto.

Então fiz o mesmo que no primeiro passo, só que desta vez escolhi a cor azul.

Criei uma nova camada de ajuste de Color Balance, brinquei com as cores até encontrar uma cor azul que realmente parecesse real e ainda sobressaísse na foto.  uma vez criada a layer (camada) outra vez toda a imagem vai ser afetada e junto com a camada de ajuste vem uma máscara.

Desta vez como o que eu quero que mude na foto é pouco seria mais fácil para mim esconder toda alteração e em vez de pintar de negro, pintar de branco.  Então seleciono a máscara vou até ferramentas e seleciono paint bucket ( lata de tinta) e jogo a tinta sobre toda a imagem (clicando uma vez sobre a imagem se a máscara estiver selecionada) isto vai fazer com que a máscara fique toda preta e a alteração de cor que acaba de fazer vai desaparecer. Agora você seleciona o pincel mais uma vez, desta vez escolha a cor branca e pinte somente onde você quer que a mudança tome efeito, nesse caso o jeans.

Aqui, uma cor azul somente se via muito falsa então uma vêz que havia terminado com o passo anterior eu decidi mudar o estilo de camada (informação também disponível no link postado acima)  para overlay e controlei a visibilidade (transparência) para 60 por cento.  Esse foi o resultado:

Novamente criei uma camada de ajuste, desta vez uma preto e branco, exclui o corpo da modelo e baixei a transparência até chegar a uma cor que me interessasse. (ou seja estava baixando a intensidade de cores de toda a imagem exceto da modelo.

Depois repeti o mesmo passo mas desta vez não omiti nada e baixei a transparência para 50 por cento e a pus em overlay.  (o overlay aumenta contraste e se relaciona melhor com a foto. Resultado:

Aqui eu peguei uma outra imagem que fiz no mesmo dia, a adicionei como nova camada nessa imagem e a transformei primeiro com free transfom fazendo a menor depois com distort para que ficasse na posição correta que eu queria.  Essas ferramentas estão em Edit-Transform .  Uma vez que fiz a nova camada do tamanho da tela da televisão eu a sobrepus sobre a tela e transformei essa nova camada em overlay.  Da primeira vez não ficou legal então mudei a transparência da camada e repeti os passos algumas vezes fazendo com que a imagem ficasse cada vez mais real.

Agora queria adicionar algo mais na foto, algo que não havia pensado antes de fotografar. Sangue. Isso é um assunto complicado, e cabe a cada um encontrar a melhor maneira. Existe na internet um milhão de tutoriais para este estilo de coisas, aqui eu fui conservador e não tanto perfeccionista.

Primeiro criei uma nova camada vazia. (layer-New layer) ou se for na parte inferior da paleta Camadas vai encontrar antes da lata de lixo um ícone que ao clicár-lo cria uma nova camada vazia.

Depois escolhi o pincel e uma brush (pincel) que parecia a sangue. Escolhi a cor vermelha que mais me agradou  (ver Pincéis em Adobe ) pintei sobre os locais que queria, e pus a camada em Overlay. Mais uma vez isso somente não chegava ao resultado que queria então refiz esse passo várias vezes, escolhendo diferentes pincéis, tonalidades, cores e percentagem de visibilidade (opacity):

Outra vez adicionei mais sangue a lugares que me interessavam, ao lado da guitarra e na parte do peito e do braço da modelo tudo seguindo os mesmos passos anteriores.  Só que aqui descobri mais uma coisa que me incomodava, as marcas na barriga da modelo.

Então criei uma nova layer (camada) vazia, fui até as ferramentas e escolhi o Healing Brush ( Pincél de recuperação)

Aqui o cuidado é o mais importante.  quanto mais camadas e mais perto chegar do que quer alterar mais perfeito vai ficar a imagem.  ( ver galeria de Ferramentas de Retoque )

Então fiz um zoom   ao mais próximo da barriga da modelo e comecei a pintar os traços que arcavam sua barriga até que chegasse a um ponto mais liso.  como o resultado que essa ferramenta cria não é perfeito vou diminuindo a visibilidade (opacity) da layer e criando novas, isso faz com que essas correções se mesclem melhor com a imagem e em retorno dá uma realidade à correção.

Com cada imagem que entrego a clientes, sendo ela de casamento, eventos, moda ou criação artística sempre há algum tipo de edição. Algumas coisas aprendi na escola, outras pesquisei na internet, e mais algumas venho descobrindo em horas brincando de artista na frente de uma tela de computador.

Ao decorrer dos anos conheci muita gente disposta a sentar e ensinar-me macetes, manhas, dicas, atalhos e invenções próprias para melhorar imagens, consertar erros, criar coisas novas, planejar com antecedência uma foto, sabendo que edição vai usar antes mesmo de apertar o botão da máquina.

Hoje então, atendendo a pedidos de muitos amigos, reais e virtuais, decidi dedicar uma parte do meu blog para isso. Tenho muito que aprender pois o photoshop é um programa de uma profundidade e versatilidade inimaginável, mas se posso ajudar aos que estão começando, aos que querem experimentar coisas novas, ou mesmo aos que estão finalmente fazendo a transferência ao mundo digital, é uma maneira de recompensar a todos que me ajudaram no passado.

Então aqui, nesse espaço, uma vez por semana (no mínimo) vou postar um tutorial para uma imagem, um macete, uma dica, seja da mais simples edição de uma foto até uma transformação completa de uma imagem. Sempre relacionado exclusivamente ao Adobe Photoshop.

With each image a client receives, whether it is a wedding picture, an event image or a fashion shot, there is always some sort of editing. Some things I learned in school, others were researched on the internet, some were taught by friends and some I learned through hours in front of a computer screen playing around pretending to be creating art.

Throughout the years I have met several people who were able and willing to teach me shortcuts, hints, different ways of doing things, how to make some images better, how to know the difference. Sometimes even to plan a shot and its editing well before ever pressing the camera´s shutter release.

Today answering several friend’s requests, personal and virtual, I decided to open a part of my blog for the sole purpose of posting tutorials, hints, tricks and solutions I have learned or been taught. I have very much to learn, as Photoshop is an unimaginably versatile and complex software, however if I can help those who are starting out, who want to learn something new, who think I may have something they are interested in, I see it as a way to pass along some of what some people were very kind to allow me to learn.

I also leave open the space for those who would like to share their own knowledge, those who have questions, those who have complaints. In short feel free to take part in any way you would like. However please remember, photoshop is a software in which there are always thousands of ways of doing any one thing. This is the way that works for ME, feel free to go and find what works for you.

The first post/tutorial will be posted Monday Nov. 30, and every Monday after that I will release a new one. Here are some examples of images I will be explaining, these are images with a bit more work but we will most certainly go through wedding pictures, events, fashion and much more.
